Our workshop carves this box-style chess set from a single piece of beech, and at 70 cm (about 28 in) it is a substantial board. It rests on a box stand whose edges and legs are carved as well, so the chessboard sits on a small piece of furniture of its own.
When the top is opened, the chess pieces can be stored inside, so nothing needs to be fetched from a cupboard before a game. Carved letters and numbers mark the files and ranks of the board. A set built this way belongs in one place, beside an armchair or in a study, where it becomes part of the room.
