Our workshop carves this mini chess set for kids from one piece of beech, keeping the classic design and its expanded playing field on a board of just 24 cm (about 9 in). Letters and numbers are carved into it too. The size suits smaller hands, and the set is easy to carry to a friend’s house or to put away on a shelf in a child’s room.
The pieces, made of beech and walnut, are easy to recognise, so a beginner can concentrate on how each one moves. Learning turns into play: a parent and child can set up a game on the kitchen table in a minute and clear it away just as quickly.
