What defines this classic chess set is its expanded playing field: on a board of 30 cm (about 12 in), carved from one solid piece of beech, the squares are given more of the surface than a wide border would allow. The result is a compact set whose grid is easy to read at a glance.
The letters and numbers around the field are carved into the wood, so the coordinates are part of the board itself. Chess on an eight-by-eight board involves no dice and no hidden information: everything that matters lies in front of both players, which makes it a fair first game to share with a child.
