Everyday games at home or in a chess class suit this classic chess set well. It is a 40 cm (about 16 in) board made of plywood and beech wood rather than carved from one piece, and its expanded playing field devotes more of that surface to the sixty-four squares.
Players improve at chess by playing often, and a board that can be opened on a classroom desk or a kitchen table and put away again afterwards suits that routine. The playing pieces are made of beech and walnut, so the beech of the board appears in the pieces as well.
