Measuring 60 cm (about 24 in) square, this classic walnut chess and backgammon set (nardi) is carved from a single solid block of that wood. Walnut is warm brown, ranging from pale brown to dark chocolate, and it is a traditional choice for fine furniture.
Its chessboard carries cast bronze letters and numbers, which add a touch of metal to the brown wood. Backgammon, widely regarded as one of the oldest board games, is a test of judgement as well as dice: flexible thinking, careful calculation of each move and quick decisions are what count.
