The seventh-century Church of St. Gayane in Etchmiadzin is engraved on one side of this backgammon set (nardi). One of our classic models, the board measures 60 cm (about 24 in) and is carved from one piece of beech.
The church belongs to the group of monuments at Etchmiadzin that UNESCO has inscribed on its World Heritage List, along with the cathedral, the church of St. Hripsime and the archaeological site of Zvartnots. As in every game of backgammon, chance and skill meet here: the dice decide the numbers, the players decide the moves. For anyone who has walked through Etchmiadzin, the engraving brings a familiar silhouette to the games table.
