From one solid piece of beech wood, our workshop carves this eternity sign chess and backgammon set (nardi), which measures 40 cm (about 16 in) across. Beech is a pale timber with a straight grain and a fine, even texture. The board bears the eternity sign, and the letters and numbers of its chessboard are carved as well.
In Armenian the sign is called arevakhach: a sun-like wheel whose arms appear to turn around a centre, their number varying from one example to the next. For the medieval Armenian world, the wheel expressed the idea of an eternal, heavenly life. Backgammon, considered by many one of the oldest games, is a logical game that values flexible thinking, precise calculation of moves and quick decisions.
