Two players at a kitchen table, or a pair of friends in a study, have room enough on this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi), 40 cm (about 16 in) square. It is a middle size, roomy enough for relaxed play and still easy to carry from room to room. A smooth border runs around the edge, and the whole set is carved from one solid piece of beech.
With the border kept plain, the carved letters and numbers beside the chess squares and the points of the backgammon board carry the design. Backgammon ranks among the oldest games known, and it is still a test of logic in which flexible thinking, sound counting and the ability to decide fast make the difference. Chess, by contrast, keeps every piece in plain view and leaves nothing to the dice.
