Carving this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) begins with one piece of beech wood, a hard, dense timber, and ends with a 50 cm (about 20 in) board edged by a zigzag ornament border. The letters and numbers that label the chessboard are carved as well, in keeping with the rest of the set.
Backgammon is widely held to be among the world’s oldest games. Behind the roll of the dice lies a game of logic, which rewards players who stay flexible, work out the order of their moves with care and decide without hesitating. Armenians generally call it nardi, and long and short nardi are both played on the same board. Chess, the other half of the set, leaves nothing at all to chance.
