A floral ornament, engraved into the border, gives this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) its character. The motif brings plant forms into a game board otherwise built from geometry: the squares of chess and the points of backgammon. The board itself, 50 cm (about 20 in) across, is carved out of solid beech in one piece.
Like the border, the letters and numbers beside the chess field are cut into the wood itself. Backgammon goes back so far that it is counted among the world’s oldest games, yet what decides it is thinking: a flexible mind, a sequence of steps worked out precisely and a decision taken without delay. At this size both games have comfortable room, whether two friends meet for chess or the whole family takes turns at nardi.
