Generous at 50 cm (about 20 in), this chess and backgammon set (nardi) gives both games a roomy board. It is carved from one solid piece of wood, inlaid with another wood and engraved with an ornamental braid, while the letters and numbers of its chess field are cast in bronze.
Armenian ornament, from which the braid comes, offers motifs, types and forms in great variety. Backgammon, thought by many to be among the oldest games in the world, depends on logic: it asks for adaptable thinking, an exact sense of how one move leads to the next and the confidence to decide at once. At this size the set suits a games room or a study with a table of its own.
