The 50 cm (about 20 in) board of this chess and backgammon set (nardi) is carved whole from beech, and its border is worked in bas-relief: a floral ornament raised slightly above the surrounding surface. Floral work of this kind is one strand of Armenian ornament, an art that has developed a great many motifs, types and forms.
Bronze, cast into letters and numbers, labels the files and ranks of the chessboard. When the evening moves on to backgammon, the dice come out, yet this game, counted among the oldest in the world, is at heart a matter of reasoning: it values a flexible mind, an accurate count of moves in sequence and quick decisions. Chess, the other game in the set, keeps nothing hidden and leaves nothing to chance.
