This backgammon (nardi) table, 60 x 60 x 63 cm (about 24 in), gives the game a permanent place in a living room or study: two chairs are all it needs. It is made of beech, with the coat of arms of Armenia carved on one side of the board. Similar engraved patterns run all around the playing field and down the legs.
The carved emblem reproduces that of Armenia’s First Republic (1918–1920), and its shield carries the arms of historic Armenia’s four royal dynasties. Among the games people still play, backgammon is considered one of the oldest, and it rewards a flexible mind, careful calculation of the moves ahead and the ability to decide quickly. A plywood storage box keeps the pieces together when the table is not in use.
