Compact at 30 cm (about 12 in), this chess set with a contour outline fits a desk corner, a bedside table or the fold-down table of a train seat. It is carved from one piece of beech, pale and even in texture, and the letters and numbers of the chessboard are carved as well.
On a small board the whole game stays within arm’s reach: sixteen pieces a side on sixty-four squares, with the two players close enough to talk the position over. That makes it a good board for practising openings between longer games, or for a young player still learning how the knight and the bishop move.
