Also called the wheel of eternity, the eternity sign engraved on this backgammon set (nardi) expresses the idea of eternal life and serves Armenians as a symbol of national identity. Besides the sign, the design brings in a braid motif and an inlay of a second wood. The 60 cm (about 24 in) board, one of our classic models, is carved from one piece of solid wood.
The same wheel became one of the leading motifs of Armenian carpets, which were mostly made as dowry pieces, gifts and commemorative pieces. An inlay is made by setting one wood into another, so this part of the decoration is built into the board itself. On the reverse, the board is fitted for a game of draughts.
