Carved from a single piece of beech wood, this deer backgammon set (nardi) measures 60 cm (about 24 in) and carries our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat together with an engraved image of deer. Hrachya Ohanyan created the outline, and it has appeared in our products since 2000. The reverse side of the board is made for checkers (draughts), so the set offers a second game as well.
Mount Ararat is a volcanic massif with two peaks, Greater and Lesser Ararat, and on clear days it can be seen from Yerevan. Many Armenians regard it as a sacred mountain, and it is widely seen as an emblem of Armenian identity. Deer, in turn, often stand for nobility, majesty, beauty and grace. With both images, the board is as much at home on display as on the games table.
