Carpet patterns have carried their own symbols and secret meanings since ancient times, and the engraving on this 40 cm (about 16 in) Lori carpet backgammon set (nardi) shows one such design: an Armenian Lori carpet. The whole board is carved from one beech piece, and its other face is made for checkers.
Among the features of Armenian carpets is the cross-stone pattern. Such rugs once lay on the floors of Armenian homes and also decorated walls and furniture; here one of their designs becomes the ground for a game. At this size, the board fits a coffee table without crowding it.
