With a board of 50 cm (about 20 in), this eternity sign backgammon set (nardi) sits easily on a coffee table, leaving room for cups and a plate of snacks beside it. One piece of beech was carved to make the board, which bears the engraved eternity sign.
Its arms circle a centre like the rays of a turning sun. In medieval Armenian culture the sign meant an eternal, heavenly life, an idea it still carries today, and it also serves as a symbol of Armenian national identity. On its back, the board is marked for draughts, so a second game comes without a second board.
