Beech, carved from a single piece, gives this 50 cm (about 20 in) three-player backgammon set (nardi) its special three-sided board. All three sides are decorated with engraved Armenian ornamental patterns, drawn from a decorative tradition with a wide range of motifs, types and forms.
The three-player version of backgammon was invented by Nerses Nersesyan in 2007. Each player takes 15 pieces, in white, black or red, and the winner is the first to clear all of their pieces from the board. With two opponents instead of one, every move has to be weighed against both of them, which gives the game a character of its own.
