With a 60 cm (about 24 in) board, this pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi) gives the game a generous field and its ornament plenty of room. The board is carved from a single block of beech. On one side, pomegranate and grapes are engraved against a lattice background, and the set also bears the workshop’s copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat.
Together the two fruits stand for life, prosperity, abundance and well-being. Wine-making in the Armenian highlands goes back a very long way: excavations in the Areni cave brought to light a site described as the oldest winery known anywhere. The outline shows Mount Ararat, whose Armenian name is Masis; Hrachya Ohanyan created it, and it has appeared on our products since 2000. Turned over, the board offers a field for draughts.
