Holiday cabins, student rooms and long train journeys all suit this compact ornamental backgammon set (nardi), a mere 30 x 30 x 3 cm (about 12 in) yet still offering a full game for two. As a classic model, it is carved from one piece of beech, and an ornamental braid is engraved at its centre.
A braid of interlaced bands, the design comes from Armenian ornament, a tradition with a great many motifs, types and forms. Its back is made for draughts, adding a second game without adding anything to the luggage. Backgammon is often listed among the world’s oldest board games, and on a board this small a beginner can take in the whole field at a glance.
