Colourful epoxy resin fills the engraved pomegranate on one side of this walnut backgammon set (nardi), picking out a fruit that Armenian tradition treats as a national symbol of prosperity and abundance. Our workshop carves this classic model from a single piece of walnut, 60 cm (about 24 in) across.
Walnut is a warm brown wood that carves well and has a long place in fine furniture making, so the colours of the resin sit against a rich, darker ground. A draughts field occupies the reverse of the board. Among bookshelves and a writing desk in dark wood, the set looks at home even on evenings when nobody plays.
