One piece of beech, carved as a whole, makes up this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi), a board 40 cm (about 16 in) square. Its surface carries our copyrighted outline of the mountain, and the letters and numbers that name every file and rank of the chessboard are carved straight into the wood.
Ararat, the mountain behind the motif, has two summits, Greater and Lesser Ararat, joined in one volcanic massif. The single board serves both games. Chess is settled by the players alone; backgammon, counted among the oldest games still played, lets the dice offer the options and then rewards a flexible mind, a careful count of the moves ahead and the nerve to decide quickly.
