For a family that likes to alternate between the two games, this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) puts both on a board of 50 cm (about 20 in). A smooth border and a body carved from a single piece of beech give it a plain, classic look that fits a dining table as easily as a games corner.
For chess there are sixty-four squares in an eight-by-eight field, with carved letters and numbers alongside to name each square.
