This compact classic chess set is worked from one piece of beech wood: a 30 cm (about 12 in) board with an openwork ornament as its border and an expanded playing field within. The openwork gives the frame a light, lace-like character that contrasts with the regular grid of the squares.
Carved letters and numbers run along the field, so a position from a newspaper column or a chess app can be set up square by square and played out on real wood. Its small size makes the set easy to keep on a kitchen table or in a child’s room, and the openwork border keeps it from looking like a plain practice board.
