Blue rivers of epoxy resin run through the design on each face of this walnut backgammon set (nardi), 60 cm (about 24 in) across. The river shapes are engraved into the board and the channels are filled with the resin, so the blue lies within the wood rather than on top of it.
Walnut ranges from pale brown to dark chocolate, and against that warm ground the blue reads like water running through a landscape. The board itself is carved from a single piece of walnut, a model our workshop counts among its classics. It is a set to leave out on a low table in the living room, where the rivers can be seen between games.
