Players who drift from chess to backgammon and back over a long evening have both games to hand in this chess and backgammon set (nardi): its 50 cm (about 20 in) board is one carved piece of beech. An openwork lattice forms its border, and its ornament draws on Armenian decorative art, a tradition that knows many motifs, types and forms.
Cast bronze gives the chess field its letters and numbers. Backgammon, reputedly among the oldest games on earth, is in essence a contest of reasoning: whoever thinks most flexibly, calculates the coming moves most carefully and decides fastest usually has the edge. The size lets either game be played without crowding the pieces.
