Carved out of a single piece of straight-grained beech wood, this 30 cm (about 12 in) chess and backgammon set (nardi) is a two-in-one model with a contour outline. The engraved pattern on its surface belongs to Armenian ornament, a field in which motifs, types and forms come in great variety.
Backgammon has a reputation as one of the world’s oldest games, and at heart it is a thinking game, won through mental agility, a careful reckoning of how the moves should follow one another and quick decisions. For chess, the squares are named by letters and numbers cast in bronze. The set is small enough to take along when visiting friends, so both games can travel together.
