Both sides of this two-sided walnut backgammon set (nardi) carry stylised ornaments, engraved into the wood and filled with epoxy resin. They draw on Armenian decorative art, a tradition rich in motifs, types and forms, and the board itself, a classic model 60 cm (about 24 in) across, is cut from one piece of walnut.
The walnut, with its usually straight grain, gives the ornament a calm background, while the resin picks out each engraved line. Because both sides are decorated, the closed set works as a decorative object in its own right on a sideboard or a chest. Opened, it gives two players a roomy field for long evenings of play.
