The board of this ornamental backgammon set (nardi) starts life as one solid piece of beech, a hard and dense wood, which is carved to 60 cm (about 24 in) and given a contour outline. An Armenian ornament is engraved on one of its sides.
Armenian ornament is varied in its motifs, its types and its forms, and the pattern engraved here comes from that tradition. In backgammon, victory goes to whoever bears off all of their pieces first. Its reverse is laid out for checkers (draughts). On a side table by the sofa, the set is ready whenever two people find time for a game.
