The making of this handmade wooden pomegranate starts with beech, carved into the shape of the fruit and painted red. It stands 14 cm tall and 6 cm across, and on one side it shows its seeds, made from coloured corn kernels.
Its meaning in Armenian tradition is generous: life, prosperity, abundance and well-being, together with a link to fertility. Pomegranates and grapevines were among the carved ornament of Zvartnots, an early medieval cathedral, and a wooden pomegranate belongs to the same long line of decoration. As a present it is a classic, and at home it sits well on a bookshelf or a hall table.
