First carved from beech wood, then painted red, this handmade pomegranate is a slender piece, 12 cm tall and 5 cm across. Its seeds are shown on one side, each one a coloured corn kernel, so wood, paint and corn all play a part in one small object.
The pomegranate holds a special place in Armenian tradition, where it symbolises life, prosperity, abundance and well-being; for that reason it is a classic gift and a familiar piece of home decoration. Narrow enough to sit on a windowsill or in a gap between books, it adds a spot of red wherever it is placed.
