David of Sassoun, the hero of the Armenian national epic “Daredevils of Sassoun”, appears on this backgammon set (nardi) in the form of his monument, which is engraved on the board. The set is cut from one piece of beech, and its board measures 60 cm across.
Few board games are thought to be older than backgammon, and on this board the game meets a hero of Armenia’s own epic tradition. For families who know the tales of Sassoun, the engraved monument offers an easy way to pass the story of David on to children between moves, so a game of nardi doubles as a small lesson in heritage.
