Built around a 60 cm (about 24 in) board, this chess and backgammon set (nardi) is sized for a proper games table rather than a side table. It is carved from one piece of beech and has a contour outline, and the chessboard’s files and ranks are labelled with carved letters and numbers.
In backgammon each player moves their checkers around the board, and the first to bear them all off wins. Often named among the oldest games still played, it is a game of logic that rewards quick wits, a careful reckoning of the moves ahead and the confidence to decide fast. Chess, the second game in the set, brings two armies of sixteen to the same large board.
