Made for the middle of a large table rather than the corner of a small one, this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) measures 60 cm (about 24 in) square. Its border is engraved with a floral ornament, and the board is a single carved piece of beech wood.
The large format lets both games breathe: chess pieces stand clear of one another, and the backgammon field can be taken in at a glance from either side. Backgammon would deserve respect for its age alone, being counted among the oldest games in the world, but it is also a contest of logic, rewarding a flexible mind, careful calculation of a sequence of moves and quick decisions. Chess, meanwhile, unfolds without a single roll of the dice.
