Just 30 cm (about 12 in) across, this Lori carpet backgammon set (nardi) suits a bedside table, a desk or a weekend bag, and its reverse carries a draughts board too. It was carved from beech as a single piece, and the engraving on it pictures an Armenian Lori carpet.
Armenian rugs were made above all as dowry pieces, as gifts and as commemorative pieces, and this small board carries one of their designs into everyday play. Armenian carpets are recognised, among other things, by their cross-stone pattern, and carpet patterns, so the story goes, often held secret messages.
