Regular players, the kind who set up a game most evenings, have room to spare on this backgammon set (nardi) with an ornamental pattern, whose board spans 60 cm (about 24 in). It is one of the classic models from our workshop, carved from one piece of beech, and the pattern is engraved into the wood.
Each player brings fifteen checkers around the twenty-four points, and whoever bears off all of them first wins, so luck and judgement both have their say in every game. The board holds a second game as well, since its reverse is set up for draughts.
