Hard, dense and slow to wear, beech forms this eternity backgammon set (nardi): one piece of it becomes the whole board, which measures 60 cm (about 24 in) and follows a contour outline. Engraved on it is the eternity sign, a symbol of eternal life that also gives expression to Armenian national identity.
The sign has no fixed number of arms; their count varies from one example to another, so the motif turns up in many versions. On a board that sees frequent play, the toughness of the wood pays off, and when the players want a break from backgammon, the reverse is ready for draughts.
