In a games room where a board comes out most evenings, this walnut backgammon set (nardi) is a classic model of 60 cm (about 24 in), carved from a single piece of walnut and engraved on one side with a pomegranate.
The pomegranate is filled with colourful epoxy resin, and the fruit itself has a long history in Armenian art, which used it widely, from architectural ornament to the miniatures that illustrate manuscripts. For a change of game, the reverse of the board holds a field for draughts, so regulars can switch between the two without fetching another set.
