Cut from one piece of beech wood, this classic chess set measures 50 cm (about 20 in) and combines an expanded playing field with a lattice border. Its letters and numbers are cast in bronze, so the coordinates of the board are rendered in metal rather than in wood.
With every square named by a letter and a number, a game can be followed move by move from a book, or noted down and replayed later. The lattice border, a pattern of crossing strips, supplies the ornament. Each side begins with sixteen pieces, and since chess uses no dice and hides nothing, every result rests with the players alone.
