A single board for two games, this walnut chess and backgammon set (nardi) suits a home where an evening may turn to chess or to backgammon. The 50 cm (about 20 in) board is carved from one piece of walnut, a warm brown wood with a mostly straight grain, and the fields for both games are filled with epoxy resin. The chess field is the usual eight-by-eight grid of sixty-four squares, and its letters and numbers are cast in bronze.
Backgammon is generally counted among the oldest games in the world, a logical contest that rewards a flexible mind, careful calculation of move sequences and quick decisions. Chess, by contrast, leaves nothing to chance and keeps nothing hidden, so one board holds two very different kinds of game.
