One solid piece of beech is the starting point for this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi), 60 cm (about 24 in) square, and a carved mesh pattern covers it all over. Two games come together in it: chess, with carved letters and numbers marking the files and ranks, and backgammon.
Backgammon is counted among the oldest games in the world, and it is a game of logic as much as luck: it rewards a flexible mind, careful counting of moves and quick decisions. Chess asks for the same patience in another way, with sixteen pieces on each side and nothing left to chance. With both games in one carved set, an evening at the table can start with one and finish with the other.
