Parents teaching their children both games have plenty of room on this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi): the 50 cm (about 20 in) board comes from one piece of beech and has a lattice carved into its border. The letters and numbers beside the chess squares are carved as well, so a child can call out each square by its name.
The two games make a good pair for learning: chess has no dice and nothing hidden, while backgammon, held to be among the oldest games anywhere, mixes chance with logic and rewards a flexible mind, accurate counting of the moves to come and quick decisions. The wide board leaves young players room to move their pieces without knocking the others over.
