At 70 cm (about 28 in) a side, this classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) gives both games plenty of room. The set is carved from one solid piece of beech, and the letters and numbers on its chessboard are carved as well.
A board of this size belongs on a low table or a large desk, where it can be left open between sessions. Backgammon has a good claim to being among the world’s oldest games, and it is won with logic: a supple mind, precise counting and fast, sure decisions. Chess adds a contest of a different kind, with no dice and nothing hidden from either player. On a set this large, onlookers can follow either game from across the table.
