In a bright study or a living room with pale furniture, this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi) in a light finish sits comfortably. The board measures 40 cm (about 16 in) and is carved from one piece of beech, a wood whose colour runs from straw to a light pinkish brown. For the chess field, the letters and numbers are cast in bronze.
The copyrighted outline depicts Mount Ararat, which can be seen from the monastery of Khor Virap on the Ararat plain. Backgammon has a very long history and is believed to rank among the world’s oldest games; it is a game of logic for quick thinkers who can count several moves ahead. In chess, by its nature, every piece stays in view of both players.
