A single piece of beech wood is the starting point for this bear backgammon set (nardi), carved into a board 60 cm (about 24 in) across and given a contour outline. On one side a picture of a bear is engraved, cut into the beech itself rather than laid on top of it, while the board’s other side is reserved for a game of draughts.
Beech is hard, dense and hard-wearing, which counts on a board where checkers are moved and stacked game after game. In backgammon, each of the two players tries to be first to bear off all of their checkers, so a bear on the board brings a small pun for anyone who enjoys one. Between games the set looks at home on a coffee table or a sideboard.
