Measuring 60 cm (about 24 in), this rural scene backgammon set (nardi) is a large two-sided board whose entire surface is covered by a combination of complex elements. It is carved from one piece of walnut and inlaid with hornbeam. On one side an everyday village scene unfolds: a woman spins yarn at a traditional spinning wheel, while a second figure tends a khnotsi, the traditional butter churn, which hangs from a tree.
The reverse belongs to checkers and is engraved with ornament that resembles wickerwork. Mount Ararat, held sacred by many Armenians, enters the design through our copyrighted outline. Hrachya Ohanyan is the author of this set, as he is of all our pieces that carry the outline, which the workshop has used since 2000.
