At 3 cm in diameter, these backgammon (nardi) checkers pair a wooden base with an eternity sign of cast aluminium–zinc alloy and bronze, attached to each piece. Velvet fabric covers the bottom of every checker and protects the board while the game is played.
The eternity sign, or arevakhach, is a whirling, sun-like wheel set around a centre, and the number of its arms varies from one example to another. In medieval Armenian culture it stood for eternal, heavenly life. It is one of the most frequent motifs of Armenian architecture, carved on church walls, gravestones and khachkars, and it also appears in illuminated manuscripts and carpets.
