Our workshop carves the whole 60 cm (about 24 in) board of this classic peacock backgammon set (nardi) out of one piece of beech. A peacock is engraved into the wood, and a round medallion forms part of the design.
Many cultures through history have admired the peacock as an exotic bird and an emblem of grace and beauty, and the male is said to be a rainbow brought to life. On this board the bird is cut into pale, fine-grained beech, a wood with an even texture that holds the lines of an engraving cleanly. The underside is kept for another game, checkers (draughts).
