Courage and inspiration are what the lion stands for, and a lion head is the subject of this classic backgammon set (nardi). Carved from a single piece of beech, the 60 cm (about 24 in) board carries the engraved lion under a warm varnished finish, and its other side is made for a game of checkers.
The motif is firmly rooted in Armenian pictography and in the country’s coats of arms. The warm tone of the finish helps the board sit easily among older furniture, in a library or a panelled study, where a lion head looks entirely in place.
